Abstract NBR 7190 (ABNT, 1997) defines the simplified characterization, where there is the use of mathematical relationships between the properties of strength and stiffness. Due to the great influence of porosity and apparent density on wood properties and the search for increasingly accurate mathematical models, this work aimed to generate regression models for the estimation of static bending properties (strength " f M " and modulus " E M "), hardness parallel to the grain " f H,0 " and normal to the grain " f H,90 " and toughness "W" of Brazilian tropical woods from the porosity values, obtained through the analysis mercury instruction porosimetry, apparent density and based on both properties in multivariate regression models. All regression models presented coefficients of determination "R 2 " greater than 50%, where f M , f H,90 and W were best estimated by density apparent, E M and f H,0 were better estimated considering apparent density and porosity.

Resumo ANBR 7190 (ABNT, 1997) define a caracterização simplificada, onde há o uso de relações matemáticas entre as propriedades de resistência e rigidez. Devido à grande influência da porosidade e da densidade aparente nas propriedades das madeiras e à busca por modelos matemáticos cada vez mais precisos, este trabalho teve como objetivo’ gerar modelos de regressão para a estimativa das propriedades de flexão estática (resistência “f M ” e módulo “E M ”), resistência à dureza paralela “f H,0 ” e normal às fibras “f H,90 ”, e resistência à tenacidade “W” de madeiras tropicais brasileiras a partir dos valores de porosidade, obtidos por meio da análise de porosimetria por intrusão de mercúrio, da densidade aparente e com base em ambas as propriedades em modelos de regressão multivariáveis. Todos os modelos de regressão apresentaram coeficientes de determinação “R2” superiores a 50%. A f M , a f H,90 e a W foram melhor estimadas pela densidade aparente, enquanto o E M e a f H,0 foram melhor estimados considerando a densidade aparente e a porosidade.

ABSTRACT To simplify the characterization of wood species, the Brazilian standard document ABNT NBR 7190-1 (2022) establishes the determination of mechanical properties employing the characteristic strength in the compression parallel to grain (fc0,k). This mechanical property is estimated using the linear relation given by the following expression fv0,k = 0.12·fc0,k Brazilian and European standard documents support the estimation of fv0,k using relations among properties. However, the European guidelines in the EN 384 (2019) have used the conventional characteristic strength in the static bending test (fM,k). Thus, this study aimed to investigate the efficiency of the ratio fv0,k = 0.12·fc0,k for adopting 30 hardwoods. The variance analysis results demonstrate the divergence among the experimental outcomes and those values estimated using the relation cited. Therefore, regression models at two parameters were considered to obtain more accurate estimates of fv0,k by adopting fc0,k, and fM,k as independent variables. Regarding the results, the geometric (R² = 80.80%) and linear (R² = 74.19%) models were the most accurate for the estimates of fv0,k in terms of fc0,k, and fM,k, respectively. This fact evinces the good accuracy of the models under consideration, which may provide a more rigorous structural design compared to the correlation currently prescribed by the ABNT NBR 7190-1 (2022).

RESUMO Para simplificar a caracterização de espécies de madeira, o documento normativo brasileiro ABNT NBR 7190-1 (2022) estabelece a determinação de propriedades mecânicas por meio da resistência característica na compressão paralela às fibras (fc0,k). Essa propriedade mecânica é estimada utilizando-se da relação linear dada pela expressão a seguir fv0,k = 0.12·fc0,k. Ambos os documentos normativos europeu e brasileiro prescrevem a estimativa da fv0,k empregando-se relações entre propriedades, embora as diretrizes da europeia contidas na EN 384 (2019) utilize a resistência característica convencional obtida no teste de flexão estática (fM,k). Assim, esse estudo teve o objetivo de investigar a eficiência da relação fv0,k = 0.12·fc0,k para 30 espécies folhosas. Os resultados da análise de variância demonstram a divergência entre os resultados experimentais e aqueles estimados utilizando-se da relação citada. Portanto, modelos de regressão em função de dois parâmetros foram considerados para se obter estimativas mais precisas da fv0,k através da adoção da fc0,k e fM,k como variáveis independentes. Com relação aos resultados, os modelos geométrico (R² = 80.80%) e linear (R² = 74.19%) foram os mais precisos para a estimativa da fv0,k em termos da fc0,k e fM,k, respectivamente. Este fato evidencia a boa precisão dos modelos em questão, o que pode proporcionar um dimensionamento estrutural mais rigoroso quando comparado à correlação atualmente prescrita pela ABNT NBR 7190-1 (2022).

ABSTRACT Wood has several properties that make it attractive when compared to other materials, however, for its use, it is necessary to know the values of resistance and stiffness. In this sense, the use of non-destructive techniques adds to the process. Among the non-destructive techniques of mechanical evaluation, we highlight those that use the natural frequencies of vibration whose results can be repeated and compared over time. This research aimed to relate the physical and mechanical properties of cajueiro wood [Anacardium sp], with the apparent density and with the natural frequency of the transversal vibration test, through regression models. Twenty-four transverse vibration tests and 204 experimental determinations were performed. Linear regression models were then generated as a function of apparent density and transverse vibration frequency, as well as quadratic multivariable regression models, to estimate wood properties. From the linear regression models, weak correlations were noted between density and natural frequency with the physico-mechanical properties evaluated, resulting in low precision estimates. Regarding the multivariable regression models, quadratic adjusted coefficients of determination (R²aj) higher than 80% were verified for 03 models of the 16 evaluated.

RESUMO A madeira possui diversas propriedades que a torna atraente frente a outros materiais, entretanto, para sua utilização, com segurança, é necessário o conhecimento dos valores de resistência e elasticidade. Nesse sentido, a utilização de técnicas não destrutivas vem a agregar no processo de avaliação. Entre as técnicas não destrutivas de avaliação mecânica, destacam-se aquelas que utilizam as frequências naturais de vibração cujos resultados podem ser repetidos e comparados ao longo do tempo. Esta pesquisa objetivou relacionar as propriedades físicas e mecânicas da madeira de cajueiro [Anacardium sp], com a densidade aparente e com a frequência natural do ensaio de vibração transversal, por meio de modelos de regressão. Foram realizados 24 ensaios de vibração transversal e mais 204 determinações experimentais. Na sequência, foram gerados modelos de regressão lineares em função da densidade aparente e da frequência de vibração transversal, bem como modelos de regressão multivariáveis quadráticos, de forma a estimar as propriedades das madeiras. Dos modelos de regressão lineares, foram notadas fracas correlações entre a densidade e a frequência natural com as propriedades físico-mecânicas avaliadas, resultando em estimativas de baixa precisão. Em relação aos modelos de regressão multivariáveis, quadráticos foram verificados coeficientes de determinação ajustado (R²aj) superiores a 80 % para 03 modelos dos 16 avaliados.

Abstract This work investigates the effect of eco-friendly chemical treatments on the mechanical and physical properties of composite laminates based on sisal fibres. A 2231 full-factorial design is conducted to test the influence of chemical solution types, fibre treatment time, and polymer matrix type on the mechanical and morphological characterisation of the composites. Chemical treatments remove impurities from fibre surfaces, and enhance fibre-matrix adhesion. The treatments, especially with sodium carbonate (Na2CO3), also progressively reduce the hemicellulose fibre content. Polyester composites made with sisal fibres treated with Na2CO3 for 96h achieve enhanced strength and stiffness under tensile, compressive and impact loads. The results evidence the feasibility and efficiency of the proposed eco-friendly treatments for natural fibres and the application of renewable fibre laminates in secondary structural applications.

Abstract Natural fibres have many advantages over synthetic ones, making them attractive for reinforcing polymer materials. This work evaluates the use of an Amazonian plant, namely Curauá (Ananas erectifolius), as a reinforcement phase of biocomposites fabricated by cold pressing. Curauá fibres have been shown to be a promising fibre for composite materials, especially due to their higher elastic modulus than other plant species. An L9 Taguchi design is used to investigate the effect of fibre fraction, NaOH concentration and immersion time on the tensile properties of biocomposites. Statistical models are able of predicting and revealing the optimal composition of the biocomposites. The tensile strength of Curauá biocomposites is significantly affected by the fibre fraction, followed by the factors of immersion time and NaOH concentration. High tensile strength is obtained by adding 25 wt.% of Curauá fibres treated under different conditions. There is an interaction between NaOH concentration and the immersion time; a higher concentration requires less time or vice versa to achieve ideal roughness, promoting strong fibre/matrix adhesion.

RESUMO A madeira é um importante material de construção usado em estruturas de cobertura de telhados, pontes, viadutos e passarelas. Para melhorar o seu uso, bem como reabilitar partes estruturais deterioradas pela ação do tempo, o reforço de vigas e pilares com material compósito é utilizado. Considerando a ação do tempo na estrutura, é importante conhecer a influência e comportamento da madeira e do material compósito quando submetido ao intemperismo. Essa pesquisa objetifica avaliar a influência do reforço com CFRP (Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer) na madeira tratada com o preservativo CCB submetida à ação do intemperismo acelerado na resistência a tração paralela às fibras. Os resultados mostraram uma redução de 30% na resistência devido ao intemperismo acelerado, e um aumento da resistência à tração de 25%, mostrando assim, a influência positiva do reforço, mesmo em condições de intemperismo artificial.

ABSTRACT Wood is an important building material used in roof structures, bridges, viaducts, and pedestrian bridges. In order to improve its use, as well as rehabilitate structural parts deteriorated by weathering, reinforcement of beams and columns with composite material is performed. Given the climate action on structures, it is important to know the influence and behavior of wood and composite material when subjected to weathering. This study aimed to evaluate the influence of the reinforcement of CCB-treated wood with carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) and subjected to artificial weathering on its tensile strength parallel to the fibers. The results showed a 30% reduction in strength due to weathering and a 25% increase in tensile strength, showing the positive influence of reinforcement even under artificial weathering conditions

RESUMO Por ser um material anisotrópico e heterogêneo, o uso racional da madeira em estruturas requer o conhecimento de uma série de propriedades físicas e mecânicas. Parte das propriedades é obtida com o uso de equipamentos de grande porte, geralmente encontrados em poucos centros de pesquisas. A vibração transversal consiste em um método de ensaio não destrutivo utilizado na determinação da rigidez da madeira, em função agilidade proporcionada na realização dos ensaios. Essa pesquisa objetivou, com base na obtenção de dezessete propriedades entre físicas e mecânicas da madeira de Mandioqueira [Ruizterania albiflora (Warm.) Marc. -Berti, Vochysiaceae], espécie pouco conhecida na literatura nacional e internacional, avaliar a indicação de uso e relacionar suas propriedades físicas (estabilidade dimensional) e mecânicas (resistência e rigidez) com a densidade aparente e com a frequência natural do ensaio de vibração transversal por meio de modelos de regressão. Os resultados indicam o uso da madeira de Mandioqueira em estruturas, por apresentar propriedades equivalentes ou superiores às propriedades de outras comumente utilizadas na construção civil. Dos modelos de regressão, foram notadas fracas correlações entre a densidade e a frequência natural com as propriedades físico-mecânicas avaliadas, resultando em estimativas de baixa precisão. Entretanto, resultados mais abrangentes requerem maior número de espécies, e consistirão em objetivos de pesquisas futuras.

ABSTRACT As it is an anisotropic and heterogeneous material, the rational use of wood in structures requires knowledge of a series of physical and mechanical properties. Part of the properties is obtained with the use of large equipment, generally found in a few research centers. Transverse vibration consists of a non-destructive test method used to determine the stiffness of the wood, due to the agility provided in carrying out the tests. This research aimed, based on obtaining seventeen physical and mechanical properties of Mandioqueira wood [Ruizterania albiflora (Warm.) Marc.- Berti, Vochysiaceae], a little known species in national and international literature, evaluate the indication of use and relate its properties physical (dimensional stability) and mechanical (strength and stiffness) to the apparent density and to the natural frequency of the transversal vibration test by means of regression models. The results indicate the use of Mandioqueira wood in structures, as it has properties equivalent or superior to the properties of others commonly used in civil construction. From the regression models, weak correlations were observed between density and natural frequency with the evaluated physical-mechanical properties, resulting in low precision estimates. However, more comprehensive results require a greater number of species, and will consist in the objectives for future research.

Abstract This work investigates the mechanical behaviour of a sustainable sandwich panel, consisting of bamboo rings core, treated aluminium skins and epoxy adhesive. A Design of Experiment (DoE) is used to identify the effects of bamboo diameters (30 and 45 mm) and aluminium skin treatments (alkaline degreasing and application of primer) on the mechanical and physical properties of sandwich panels. The aluminium skins treated with the wash primer significantly increase adhesion to the polymer, resulting in greater maximum load, flexural strength, maximum skin stress and maximum core shear stress; while the skins treated with NaOH resulted in a greater flexural and core shear modulus. Relatively more rigid and resistant structures are obtained with Ø30 mm rings, due to the increased surface contact area and the number of constraints on the core. The samples fail due to the skin fracture, implying an efficient face-core bond that is attributed to the proper absorption of the polymer by bamboo and the treatment of the aluminium surface. The proposed panels present good mechanical performance, proving to be a feasible and promising alternative for secondary structural applications.

Wood toughness is a mechanical property of interest in structural design where the load impact must be considered, finding a strong application in bridges, however, not an integral part of the mechanical properties commonly investigated in the characterization of this material. This study aimed to investigate with the aid of variance analysis, the influence of growth ring orientation to obtain toughness for Angelim Saia (Parkia pendula), Eucalyptus grandis, Pinus elliottii and Corymbia citriodora wood species, considering three different positions, so that the orientation causes tensile strength in fibers near the pitch, near the bark, and in the radial direction. The results of the statistical analysis revealed that there was no significance in the orientation of the growth rings to obtain the toughness of the wood species investigated, where the highest values were for Corymbia citriodora and the least values were for Pinus elliottii.

Este trabalho objetivou avaliar a viabilidade da produção de painéis OSB feitos com espécies de madeira da caatinga do nordeste do Brasil - marmeleiro (Croton sonderianus Muell. Arg.), jurema-branca (Piptadenia stipulacea (Benth.) Ducke) e catanduva (Piptadenia moniliformis Benth.) - e resina poliuretana bicomponente derivada de mamona. As propriedades investigadas foram: densidade aparente; inchamento em espessura e absorção de água, ambos em 2 h e 24 h; módulo de elasticidade e resistência na flexão, na direção paralela e na direção perpendicular ao painel; adesão interna e arrancamento de parafuso em relação à face, conforme as normas europeias EN. Os resultados das propriedades físicas e mecânicas obtidas evidenciaram a possibilidade da produção em laboratório de painéis OSB com as três espécies analisadas, conforme valores médios e variabilidade de propriedades equivalentes às chapas fabricadas em escala industrial, além de comparados aos requisitos da norma EN 300 (EUROPEAN..., 2006) para painéis dos tipos OSB/3 e OSB/4. Pela análise de variância, os painéis OSB fabricados com strands de madeiras de catanduva apresentaram os melhores resultados para as propriedades mecânicas; para as físicas, os melhores desempenhos foram provenientes dos painéis feitos com madeira de marmeleiro e jurema-branca.

This research study aimed to evaluate the feasibility of OSB (Oriented Strand Board) production using wood species from the Brazilian Northeast's Caatinga: marmeleiro (Croton sonderianusMuell. Arg.), jurema-branca (Piptadenia stipulacea (Benth.) Ducke) and catanduva (PiptadeniamoniliformisBenth.) and castor-oil polyurethane bicomponent resin. The properties investigated were: density; thickness swelling and water absorption (2 hours and 24 hours); modulus of elasticity and bending strength in the parallel and perpendicular directions; internal bond and resistance to screw withdrawal from the face, according to EN standards. The results of the analysis of the physical and mechanical properties showed the possibility of manufacturing OSB with the cited species in the laboratory, according to the mean values and the variability of properties equivalent to those panels produced on industrial scale, and compared to EN standard requirements for OSB/3 and OSB/4. Variance analysis showed that OSB panels containing catanduva wood strands yielded the best results in terms of mechanical properties, as for the physical properties, the best performances were those of panels made with the marmeleiro and jurema-branca species.

The development of new materials based on industrial wastes has been the focus of much research for a sustainable world. The growing demand for tyres has been every year exacerbating environmental problems due to indiscriminate disposal in the nature, making a potentially harmful waste to public health. The incorporation of rubber particles from scrap tyres into polymeric composites has achieved high toughness and moderate mechanical properties. This work investigates the geometric effects (thickness, width and internal cell angle) of auxetic structures made of recycled rubber composites based on experimental and numerical data. The response surface models integrated with the swarm intelligence and finite element analysis were proposed in order to obtain a range of solutions that provides useful information to the user during the selection of geometric parameters for reentrant cells. The results revealed the cell thickness ranges from 39-40 mm and 5.98-6 mm, and the cell angle range from -0.01 to -0.06º maximize the ultimate strength. The same parameters were able to optimize the modulus of elasticity of rubber auxetic structures, excepting for the angle factor which must be set between -30º and 27.7º. The optimal Poisson's ratio was found when the cell angle ranged from -30º to -28.5º, cell width ranged from 5-5.6 mm and 2 mm in thickness.

Este trabalho propõe uma metodologia alternativa de cálculo fundamentada no Método dos Mínimos Quadrados para a obtenção do módulo de elasticidade na flexão de vigas de madeira com dimensões estruturais. As equações desenvolvidas requerem o conhecimento de um ou cinco pontos de deslocamentos medidos ao longo do comprimento das peças. Esse método permite maior precisão sobre a variável resposta e tem como base o ensaio de flexão estática a três pontos. A metodologia proposta foi empregada em concordância com as recomendações da norma Brasileira NBR 7190:1997, adaptada para peças de dimensões estruturais. Os ensaios mecânicos foram realizados em sete peças de madeira Corymbia citriodora com 540cm de comprimento, 15cm de altura e 5cm de largura. Em testes preliminares determinou-se o valor da força responsável por provocar um deslocamento vertical no meio do vão de L/200, sendo L a distância entre os apoios das vigas. A força obtida foi dividida em sete incrementos iguais (39,60N), fornecendo sete valores de deslocamento distintos. Os resultados de ambas as metodologias mostraram-se convergentes à medida que os deslocamentos se aproximaram da razão L/200, validando o uso desta relação. Os resultados do intervalo de confiança entre médias indicaram equivalência estatística entre os módulos de elasticidade por ambas as formas de cálculo e para os sete incrementos de deslocamentos. Em razão da possível presença de defeitos e da heterogeneidade da madeira, os resultados obtidos não devem ser extrapolados para outras madeiras de mesma ou de espécies diferentes, justificando o uso da presente metodologia de cálculo em cada pesquisa desenvolvida.

The objective of the present study was to propose an alternative method of calculation based on the Least Squares Method to determine the bending modulus of elasticity in timber beams with structural dimensions. The developed equations require the knowledge of one or five points of displacements along the length of the beam. This method allows greater reliability on the response variable and, it is based on the static three points bending tests. The proposed methodology was applied according to the recommendations of the Brazilian standard ABNT NBR 7190:1997, adapted for spans with structural dimensions. The tests were performed on seven Corymbia citriodora wood specimens with 540 cm of height, 15 cm of width and 5 cm of thickness. In preliminary tests was determined the value of the load responsible for causing a vertical displacement in the centre of the span (L/200), where L is the distance between the support beams. The obtained load was divided into seven equal parts, with seven load increments of intensity 39.60 N and recorded the displacements corresponding to each of these load levels. The results of the confidence interval indicated statistical equivalence between the modulus of elasticity for both forms of calculation and for the seven increments of displacements. Due to the possible presence of defects and the heterogeneity of the wood, the results should not be extrapolated to other woods of the same or different species, justifying the use of this calculation method developed in each research.

Este trabalho tem como objetivo investigar propriedades físicas (densidade volumétrica e absorção de água) e mecânicas (módulo de elasticidade e resistência à compressão) de materiais compósitos particulados em matriz epóxi reforçados com serragem de madeira, cimento Portland e silicato de magnésio. Um planejamento experimental inicial foi elaborado envolvendo apenas a resina epóxi e a serragem de madeira. Posteriormente, elegeu-se o tratamento que forneceu os maiores valores para o módulo de elasticidade na compressão. Sobre a condição escolhida, foram desenvolvidas outras quatro, incorporando-se 10% e 20% em frações mássicas de partículas de silicato de magnésio e cimento Portland sobre a resina. Os compostos com 30% de serragem de madeira Eucalyptus grandis e faixa granulométrica 50-80 US-Tyler apresentaram os melhores valores para o módulo de elasticidade na compressão, sendo utilizados como condição de referência para a inclusão das partículas de cimento e do talco. O emprego do cimento nos compostos conferiu aumentos significativos no módulo de elasticidade à compressão, densidade e redução na absorção de água.

This study aims to investigate the physical properties (bulk density, and water absorption) and mechanical properties (modulus of elasticity, and compressive strength) of particulate composite materials in epoxy resin matrix reinforced with sawdust, Portland cement and magnesium silicate. An initial experimental design was developed involving only the epoxy resin and sawdust. Subsequently, the decision was made to choose the treatment that gave the highest values for the modulus of elasticity in compression. From this chosen condition, four other conditions were developed, incorporating 10% to 20% in mass fraction of particles of magnesium silicate and Portland cement (PC-V) in the resin. Compounds with 30% of Eucalyptus grandis sawdust and range of particle size 50-80 US-Tyler showed the best values for the modulus of elasticity in compression, which was used as a reference condition for the inclusion of cement and silicate particles. The use of cement in the compounds produced a significant increase in the compressive modulus of elasticity, bulk density and reduced water absorption.

O presente trabalho objetivou avaliar as características físico mecânicas de chapas aglomeradas com partículas de leucena (Leucaena leucocephala) e resina poliuretana derivada de óleo de mamona, sendo investigados o módulo de resistência à flexão (MOR), adesão interna (AI), densidade aparente (d ap) e teor de umidade (u m). Os experimentos foram desenvolvidos com base nos procedimentos metodológicos da norma brasileira ABNT NBR 14810:2002. As chapas foram confeccionadas com pressão de compactação de 4MPa, temperatura de 90°C, partículas com 5% de teor de umidade e adição de 10% de resina poliuretana monocomponente e bicomponente derivadas de óleo de mamona. Os resultados obtidos demonstraram que as densidades aparentes obtidas foram superiores às recomendadas pela norma brasileira, sendo os painéis confeccionados com resina bicomponente 22,67% superiores ao limite superior estabelecido pela normatização técnica brasileira. Os painéis confeccionados com resina poliuretana monocomponente apresentaram os maiores valores para o teor de umidade. O módulo de resistência à flexão dos painéis fabricados com resina bicomponente mostrou ser 43,7% superior ao valor definido pela norma. A adesão interna dos painéis fabricados com resina monocomponente foi 2,5 vezes superior ao valor estipulado pela norma. Do intervalo de confiança entre médias para as resinas mono e bicomponente, apenas a adesão interna e densidade apresentaram equivalência estatística. Os coeficientes de determinação obtidos das regressões entre a adesão interna e densidade para ambas as resinas validaram o modelo de ajuste linear, sendo possível estimar a adesão interna com o conhecimento da densidade aparente das chapas.

This research aimed to test particleboard with leucena (Leucaena leucocephala) wood particles and polyurethane resin castor oil based. The response variables are: modulus of rupture (MOR), internal adhesion (AI), apparent density (d ap) and wood moisture content (u m). The experiments were developed based on the methodological procedures of the ABNT NBR 14810:2002 standard. The particleboards were manufactured by hot-pressing at 4MPa and 90°C, using timber particles with 5% of moisture content and 10% of monocomponent and bicomponent polyurethane resin. The higher moisture content was achieved when the monocomponent polyurethane resin was used. The bicomponent polyurethane resin provided a percent increase of 43.7% and 22.7% on the modulus of rupture and apparent density, respectively, when compared to the standard limit. The internal adhesion of the panels manufactured with monocomponent resin was 2.45 times higher than the standard limit. The confidence interval between means revealed that the internal adhesion and apparent density exhibited statistical equivalence. A good correlation between the internal adhesion and apparent density was found, for this reason it was possible to estimate the internal adhesion of the panels based on the apparent density data.

The amount of waste rubber has gradually increased over recent years because of over-growing use of rubber products. The disposal of waste rubber has caused serious environmental problems. The incorporation of recycled materials into cementitious composites is a feasible alternative that has gained ground in civil construction. The performance of such materials is much affected not only by the rubber addition, but also the particle size which has been controversially reported in the literature. In order to investigate the single effect of rubber particles into cement based materials, rubber cementitious composites were prepared with no silica particle additions. A full factorial design has been conducted to assess the influence of the rubber particle size (0.84/0.58 mm and 0.28/0.18 mm); mass fraction used (5, 15 and 30%); and water/cement ratio (0.35 and 0.50) on the physic-mechanical properties of the composites. The materials were characterized through apparent density, porosity, compressive strength, flexural strength, modulus of elasticity and microstructural analysis. The interactions of rubber particle size, rubber fraction and water/cement ratio affected significantly the density and compressive strength of the composites. The apparent porosity was influenced mainly by the rubber particle size. The flexural strength was affected by the main factors and the modulus of elasticity was affected by the interaction factors rubber particle size and fraction, and rubber fraction and w/c ratio.
